UNIUYO Admits 10, 926 Students For 2016/2017 Session

The University of Uyo (UNIUYO) has admitted 10, 926 students for the 2016/2017 academic session.

Speaking during the event, the Vice Chancellor, Prof Enefiok Essien, charged the new students to be studious and shun all anti-social activities.

“I encourage you to remain positively adventurous throughout your university experience. More importantly, from this moment on, you will shed most of your childish nuances and youthful exuberances and devote your time and energy to your studies.

“What this means is that you must have the right priorities, with your education at the very top. Remember that there will be no bell to ring, no parent to wake you up from bed or monitor your movement. What you need is to be disciplined enough to get prepared for your lectures and other positive social activities on time.”

“Academic work requires peace and order. Crisis leads to loss in property, time and even life; you should know that crisis may keep you on the programme longer than necessary. So, be mindful of what you do. Make sure you individually and collectively pursue peace, harmony and order, so that your academic work can proceed smoothly and you graduate on time.”

He finally reminded them that that degrees are awarded only to deserving students found worthy in learning and character.

LAUTECH ASUU Yet To Commence Academic Activities Despite Resumption, Gives Conditions

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Ogbomoso chapter, on Monday stated conditions that must be met before the ongoing industrial action will finally come to an end which will see academic activities fully resume in the school. It will be recalled that the school announced January 27th, 2017 as the reopening date of the school. However, ASUU rejected the resumption date, declaring that it had not called off its industrial action which began on Sept. 19, 2016. According to the chairman of ASUU LAUTECH chapter, Dr Biodun Olaniran, while the school had resumed, academic activities were yet to commence as a result of the ongoing strike. In his words, “Government should provide an agreeable plan of defraying the indebtedness of the outstanding N7.1 billion to the university. “They should issue a clear commitment to the settlement of arrears of sundry allowances accumulated over the years,’’ he said. “Salary is not the real issue. Our major demand borders most on the funding of the institution. “Internally Generated Revenue can never be a substitute to the funding of the university,’’ he said.

FG Reminds ASUP Of "No Work, No Pay" Policy Amidst Its Warning Strike

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige has reminded the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), who are currently on a warning strike of the ‘no work, no pay’ policy of Federal Government. In his words, “I wish to remind the trade unions that there is nothing like a “Warning Strike” in our National Industrial Relations System (NIRS) - a strike is a strike and is subject to all the rules governing strike in the world of work. “Accordingly, the provisions of Section 43 of the Trade Disputes Act, CAP. T8, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (LFN), 2004, will apply regarding the law of “No Work No Pay’’ by workers/employees notwithstanding any other circumstances in any section of the Act.” He urged the union to suspend the strike action and embrace dialogue as the government is fully ready to dialogue with them.
